  1. See my comments on iTunes for Alchemy Mobile. Once again, I think its a brilliant piece of work, and much more capable than the typical app-based synth engine. The sounds are just terrific and high quality and the ease of control of the sounds in terms of morphing them is very well done. My only criticism is the lack of a background download feature for new sound packs. I had to interrupt my iPhone’s download of Arp Dimensions because it was taking too long to download via wifi into my home network. I’ve restarted the download, and not been charged a second time, but my iPhone (now on power from the Mac) is now fully occupied downloading that sound pack. No multitasking! If you add in a quick background download it would solve this problem.

Overall though, I think Alchemy Mobile is great, and I’m very tempted to get the Mac OS X VST version for my studio Mac as a result.

  2. Ben from Camel Audio here. Thanks for the comments – I’m glad you like the way it sounds :)

Whilst it is not possible to design sounds from scratch or import audio for further manipulation, as with the desktop version of Alchemy, you can manipulate the included presets in radical ways using the remix pad and performance controls.

There are two main reasons for this: first, we feel that touch interfaces really shine in their ability to act as performance devices – to tweak and manipulate sounds live; the same controls don’t quite work as well for the type of precision editing you can achieve using a mouse. Second, with limited resources available, we wanted to focus on the features most important for the majority of users.

We will soon be providing a way to transfer sounds created with the desktop version of Alchemy to Alchemy Mobile, provided you’ve purchased the Alchemy Mobile Pro Upgrade.

Regarding using at as a remote vs Touch OSC – Touch OSC is great, I would definitely recommend it for Android users, or those who don’t want to pay $19. The advantage of using Alchemy Mobile as a controller is that its a much slicker and better experience because its designed specifically for the job. Some of the things you can do with Alchemy Mobile as a remote that you can’t do with Touch OSC – browse and select presets, view the names of performance controls assocaited with each preset, better remix pad behaviour including double tap to select to specific pad…

As with our desktop products we intend to continue developing and improving Alchemy Mobile in response to feedback from customers. Thanks again for the comments and thanks for checking it out.

    1. Yeah, definitely sounds top. For a platform awash with music software, it’s good to hear synthesised sounds with real depth.

It just would have been nice to mock up patches while sitting on the toilet or something ;)

I’m certainly sold on the idea of it as a performance tool, with the ability to transfer your own patches. Just not sure about the small keyboard section. As you say the touch screen excels as a performance device, so maybe a piano replica isn’t the way forward. There are some great solutions around, often with user defined scales.

That’s my two pence worth anyway.

      Thanks for listening Ben.

  3. It’s a bit of a cop-out really.

Includes our amazing Alchemy synth engine….but were not going to give you access to it!

Even as an ‘alchemy player’ it has a limited number of presets. So, to go ‘pro’ is more of an investment for the controller possibilities. (which can also be done using apps such as TouchOSC or Midi Touch etc).

It seems they are just trying to cash in on the amount of iPad users (not Vst users) looking for a sound toy to play with while offering a midi controller for the VST. As a preset player it still sounds good though.

  4. Is there a way to import own waveforms for synthesis via pasteboard/audiocopy?
If not, that baby would just be a preset-player for me… i need to built my own sounds from scratch :)

  5. No WIST support and only MIDI… ;)
Love this app and worth the upgrade fee :)
