I’ll try and give a roundup for you…
Bassline is the best connected 303 emulation, with MIDI sync, WIST, and AudioCopy, but in my opinion is not the most authentic sounding. It does sound sweet though if your not looking for an exact clone. It can record your loops but it has no automation so won’t remember your knob movements through the performance.
technoBox2 is very authentic sounding but is standalone with no MIDI sync, WIST or AudioCopy. Again no automation.
Rhythm Studios 303 sounds awful at extreme settings and is not authentic at all. Its tuning knob is limited to just a few positions/settings. No MIDI sync and no automation. It has WIST and Pasteboard support though (so you can copy/paste your performances into other apps).
ReBirth sounds great and is a classic in itself. Fairly authentic. Records automation and has AudioCopy and WIST. No MIDI sync though and the way the interface has been ported to iOS makes it clunky and hard to use.
Tabletop’s 303 is a nice emulation. I’m suspecting the code is based on ReBirth as it sounds pretty similar. It sounds gorgeous. You can record automation too. There’s no MIDI Sync or AudioCopy support (export of your audio is via iTunes or line out/Audio Interface only) in Tabletop but it does have WIST.
So none of them are perfect. The best sounding emulations do lack some “iOS” features. If I had to choose one it would be Tabletop, as it sounds and looks great, and has automation (a must for a 303 emulation IMO), but thats my personal choice.
I think I have all the feature sets right. It’s all from memory so someone correct if I’m wrong anywhere (as some may have been updated with features)
Thanks for the roundup James!
I actually have Tabletop but will have to try it on some better monitors to see how it sounds.
No problem. I also checked out Anaphobia Mini today which is quite a nice little free bassline synth now it has the 16-step sequencer and Virtual MIDI support. There doesn’t seem to be any export options though (unless I’ve missed it!) it so the only way to get your sounds out is by line out or through an audio interface.
I, just like anyone else, needs some good bass. I have most of the popular apps and synths but am now looking in Baselines direction. Do I need this if I already have Rythm Studio and Rebirth for the 303-like bass? Someone should do a comparison between all the iOS 303 clones..
Got this yesterday after reading this post. Loving it so far.
