Concept:

bip grew from an idea that all music exists already and the musician selects what music is to be heard. Whether it is a violin with a set of strings and a bow or a couple of decks and a mixer, the musician selects and manipulates music embedded within the instrument. And that this process of selection can occur from the micro level of notes to the mid level of parts of a piece of music to the macro level of whole pieces of music. For bip, at the micro level, the basic building building block is a beat. It is a set subdivision of time pre-set by the musician along with a sample and a set of parameters. Using a touch-surface, beats can be selected to play, thereby creating rhythmical musical phrases. These phrases can be recorded and arranged and again selected. Much like the bow of a violin, bip has a touch-strip, assignable to a number of parameters of either beats, phrases or entire songs. Using this in real-time or to record beat or pattern parameters, the touch-strip promotes creating expressive and dynamic music.
