Got three minutes and want to make some music? Figure is the fun music-making app for instant inspiration. Create an addictive beat before the next bus stop or lay down a beefy bass line while waiting in line at the bank. Figure will have you making music within seconds yet is deep enough for endless play on a transatlantic flight.
“When we set out to create Figure we knew an amazing sound was crucial to its function and simple enjoyment. Fortunately, we didn’t have to look far to find amazing sounds. Powered by Reason, our flagship desktop music production software, Figure puts our advanced Thor Polysonic Synthesizer and Kong Drum Designer in your pocket.
Playing bass, drums, and lead melodies on Figure all happens through the performance pads. These have been designed for touch control from the beginning. You can tap them like traditional keyboards or pad controllers or you can simply hold your finger down and let the rhythm wheels provide a pattern for you. You can easily tap into the sound-sculpting power of Thor’s filters, envelopes, and effects by adjusting each preset’s “Tweaks”. Don’t know what a filter or envelope is? No problem! Just move your finger along the same performance pad and listen to the changes in sound.”
Highlights:
Truly designed for mobile user on the go, Figure gives you drums, bass and lead synth, controlled by an incredibly easy to use touch interface that gets you sounding great literally in seconds. Slide your finger across the play pad and hear your bass line play. Tweak the Rhythm, Range and Scale Step wheels to get the result you’re after. Programming drumbeats is just as easy. Set the rhythm and play the drums with your fingers. You won’t want to stop. You won’t believe how amazing you and your phone can sound.
If you are new to music making, getting started making great sounding tracks has never been this easy — and sounded so great! If you are a seasoned musician – music creation has never been this fun!
The nitty gritty details:
Requirements: works on iPhone 4 or higher, not recommended for iPhone 3GS

Figure just updated to 1.1 today. Awesome!
What’s New in Version 1.1
• Save, browse and load song files
• Set length of loop (1,2,4,8 bars)
• Export audio to iTunes File Sharing
• Better recording. Tap record and then draw on the pad to start your recording. Or just press Play.
• Performance and bug fixes
@Starker It’s a limited set of sounds and patterns, not loops. You basically choose a sound and then set the number of notes per bar. You then set the range of the XY Pad and number of steps in the chosen scale. Then drag your finger across the X-axis of the XY pad to change pitch as it plays through the selected notes/range/scale. It’s kinda like an XY-Pad controlled arpeggiator.
To answer your question….if you wanted to play single notes to make your own 1 or 2 bar pattern you could set the number of notes to 1, and then it would only trigger one note each time you touch the XY Pad at the pitch you choose. Of course then you have to be at timing as there is no quantise function. It’s a nice little fun app. I really like it :-)
Can you actually play anything, or is it just a limited set of loops or patterns?
Agreed thats what i done, you get a live feel when recording it through the daw,not very mobile doing it this way but got my idea recorded and put up on soundcloud.
The more time I spend with Figure, the more I like it. Now am seriously considering buying ReBirth for iPad as well…..
Looks to me like Propellerheads delivered what they said they would with the first issue of Figure. And I am having a great time with it! We have to remember this is just the first taste, so let’s savor what we have and look forward to the musical banquet to come… In my opinion, it would be a mistake to dismiss the potential of Figure……
You can’t export or save anything with Figure – see posts above
But I can not find how to export my final song????? Does anybody know??
Thanks
I have an iPhone 4S and use it mostly for phone calls only. I have iPad 4G and my usage of it differs dramatically. First of all, I’m utilising it as part of my home studio i.e using it as Sound Nodule and Control surface for Reason 6, Cubase 6.5 and Ableton 8.3.
Most of apps that I have purchased comply with that, but Figure does not.
Let me summarise what Figure is not:
1. You can not save your patterns
2. You are limited to only 2 bars of “music”
3. You are limited to only 3 tracks/instruments
4. No import/export to Reason
5. No chaining of patterns into songs
6. No Copy/Paste
7. No MIDI
Well, to be honest, it has nothing to get your creative juices flowing :(
Maybe version 2 will address these issues, but for now it is just yet another $1 app…
The ability to Save would be most welcome.
So, I played about 30 minutes with it yesterday, gave it another try this morning in the train, and deleted it after 3 minutes.
It’s just useless in this state:
2 bars only
Patterns are boring.
No way to switch them on the fly.
Sounds are okay, but nothing exceptional and very electro/techno oriented.
No way to save your work.
No way to export.
No way to import.
No way to communicate whatever with the outside world.
and… and… and…
okay it’s just a 1$… another useless 1$ App should I Say…
ernst (CEO of propellerhead) said they wanted to go for a different approach with Figure. it’s meant to be fun and fun it is.
i personally enjoy how fast you can create a quick tune out of it but like others have said, definitely want the ability to save patterns, export audio, audiocopy/paste, and more than 2 bars definitely.
I’m way more satisfied paying a buck for Figure than I would be even if I’d only paid a buck for Kaossilator.
And before anyone starts talking about hype or fanatics, I’ve spent several thousand $$ on Korg products, and exactly $0.99 on Prop’s products.
The 2 bar limit and no save or export is idiotic, but this is a fun, good sounding, and surprising well designed app.
hilarious, just hilarious. i have never seen so much entitlement in my life. maybe i am used to spending hundreds, if not thousands, on hardware, but why all the instant hate? if you don’t think you can get what you need out of it, DON’T BUY IT. so easy. don’t buy it. for people that will spend a buck on something to drink with while they sit on the subway or wait for their dentist appointment and get their dollars worth out of it, Awesome! people waste their money on angry birds a dollar at a time so why the instantaneous rejection of a “toy” app? yeah yeah, no export. life goes on. plug your phone into something. or, i dunno, DON’T BUY IT. that “buy app” button works in reverse when you don’t click it. yes, it lacks functionality of some other apps that are out there, so go buy those.
as i said before in another comment, all you whiners will spend your dollar just so you can bitch again about how you spent it. i’m sure the developers and programmers that made this thing were prepared for your childish wrath, so take a breath, use one of the many other superior apps you already have, and get on with your iOS life. things will be ok after this, i promise.
Wow,
Props got some fanatics
Hell, figure will be hot just off the fact it was made by propellerheads
Theres a guy up there who will pay 70bucks if this thing gets an update? Not me
Pay 20 for ikaossilator man…sheesh
If propellerheads released REASON for ipad…
They could easily see 100 bucks, depending on what features they left in tact
(buy the racks stuff you need in app purchase)
(buy recording tracks)
So thats no excuse
Small market share…once it comes out on ipad…gonna be a huge increase in musician ipad sales!
;)
What I meant was 50-70$ for a full-featured reason-like iPad version, not for a simple update of the iPhone app.
By the way, I’m not a Prop fanatic at all. I even don’t have any of their desktop products, I use Logic Pro exclusively.
But its for being on the go….so once you have your idea…thats it for the day? I have way more musical ideas in a day…there is no save option…so that i can keep my ideas…so once i keep one…im stuck until i hook up…
:(
Purchased Figure…
Its pretty cool, its kinda arpeggiatorish…it has good sounds, it makes you buy ikaossilator
Korg should pay you guys because you are going to sell ikaossilator with our 1 dollar app, why you ask…well ikaossilator is doing what you arent…offering in and out options…giving 2 extra tracks, giving a bit more control, sounding just as dope! What you have done here is made a poor mans ikaossilator…
Yes it is fun to mess with, its A HUGE DOWNER that i cant save anything for later recall, as it only allows you to have one idea between wiring yourself up to a computer the old fashioned….not new…way.
If you are looking for the serious version of this…buy ikaossilator!
If you are broke and want to purchase io (but you are broke) hook up to your computer everytime you make a three piece 2bar loop…then hey this is the app for you.
This is very very very very underwhelming for propellerheads, the makers of the phenominal reason and the standard of recycle….even ancient rebirth is better!
I gave you two stars…
1. For the amount of disappointment from your fanbase, as they say…wow, this isnt reason by far!
2. If it would export something it would be useful…its not useful…if im making music on the go…im not by the computer!
3. 3 track limit…huh? Oh your kidding me i can only make 2 bars? Theres no song record? This is just weeeeeeaaaaaaaaaak by any standard…there are virgin devs making better stuff all day!
4. No user sounds? Not very many patches supplied by you…congrats we are all gonna have the same idea soon…all of us….wooooo we all sound the same exactly!
5. Way to go on giving the “customer” what they wanted! FAIL!
Its pretty clear to all of us who make music that we want reason on the ipad…however you are not delivering.
I wish i could give negative stars!

I think when iKaossilator v1.0 was released it was pretty basic. If I remember correctly it had no import/export options or AudioCopy/Paste.
Infact, I just checked and it was only added to version 2.0 nearly two months after it’s initial release.
http://www.idesignsound.com/update-ikaossilator-v2-0-released-adds-audiocopy-ipad-native-support/
I’m sure the Propellerheads have lot’s planned for Figure, and if this is the iPhone version I can’t wait to see what they do with the native iPad version :-)
Propellerhead have delivered exactly what they promised, nothing more nothing less. They are practically giving it away. Are you seriously p’d off at this!!? Have some fun, make some music.
Wasn’t sure what to think when I first downloaded it but once you get a feel for what you can do with it you can really get a decent groove going. 5 stars from me! (and it’s only 1 dollar!!)
Really? 5 stars for a two bar looper with no performance control other than the two bars…with only three instruments…doing ummm ikaossilator stuff…with limited sounds…you havent really thought this out obviously…wait until you have to go hook up everytime you want a new pattern…
What did you give ikaossilator 50 stars?
Okay, good point – my rating was partly influenced by the low price….4 stars until it’s gets updated with export options ;-)
And I would like to see more bars (selectable per part)
Deleted already. No use. Would be great for kids with no talent however. I hope they continue to develop this as Propellerheads appears to be falling behind in the mobile computing market.
Such a great potential! This must be the best sounding, most engaging audio app I’ve ever used. I’d pay 100x times for a full featured app with the same sound/presets quality and playability.
Fun. Inspiring. Very promising!
If you watch the music messe announcement linked from this site you will see that they said they may update it, but they WERENT promising anything…so no its not very promising.
OK, I haven’t watched that video. That would be VERY underwhelming.
It has loads of potential (great sound, expressiveness, and workflow), it could beat out any other app for electronic music production. I’d happily pay something between 50-70$ for such an application.
However, as you noted, Propellerhead may not be interested in developing a full featured app for a small fraction of the price of the desktop version (Reason) and for a much smaller market share. In that case, Figure would remain as a means to attract people to their desktop products. I really hope that Propellerhead continues investing in iOS products, making good profits on them.
Nice Presets, but no export, not even via itunes or email :(
you could, you know, use it like an instrument and plug it into a mixer/audio interface/however you get any other physical instrument into a recording platform…
I agree with Jay … use it like an instrument … it’s not that hard to plug into a computer and record into your DAW
You’re kidding, aren’t you? This is a iPhone-app, and Propellerhead says:
“Create an addictive beat before the next bus stop or lay down a beefy bass line while waiting in line at the bank.”
Well, usualy I don’t take my mixer and my quadcore protools-workstation at the bus stop or in line at the bank.
Pretty cool for a buck. Just what I was expecting. The one thing this app makes me want to do is go play with ikaossilator! :)
Check out a little demo track I did using Propellerheads app Figure on my soundcloud page if you are interested in what 10 minutes live work and an irig can get you for $1
soundcloud.com/freesoulsound is my page and look for the Figure Demo named track.
Thanks.
No iPad version? Seriously? What an overhyped toy.
Overhyped toy..? How can you say that? This app is made by propellerhead, so it must be brilliant ;)
It has everything aspiring iOS musician needs: massive 2 bars, 3 track preset pattern creation with fantastic no save or export options, it has iPhone and not crappy iPad native support, it is absolutely great to use while you’re on the toilet seat, no useless MIDI control or sync options, etc; did I mentioned it’s made by propellerhead software… ;)
Removed it from my iPad promptly after exhausting all of its possibilities in 30 minutes.
