GlitchBreaks (Universal)

Glitchbreaks is an iOS Universal manipulation tool for “Glitching” breakbeats. Manipulate beats to create new beats and record them.

Glitchbreaks uses four audio channels setup like mute groups. You can quickly switch between them to construct new beats, or manipulate loop points to “Cut” or “Glitch” the breaks.

Included in the factory sound set are 90 high quality loops hand crafted by Daniel Myer from Haujobb / Architect / Destroid / and more, Juan Espinosa from Cellmod, Isaac Glendening from Cesium 137, Alex Matheu from Negative Format / Distraub / Parallel Project and more, and Loopmasters: a high quality sample boutique.

Glitchbreaks can be used as a performance tool to juggle breaksbeats or destroy sounds at a granular level. You can make interesting effect-like-sounds by manipulating pitch, loop start, length, and cutting the beats with fluid responsive controls.

You can record your performance and bring it into iTunes through file sharing, or copy it out into another iOS application via Audio Copy and Paste. You pre determine the length of your recording by bars to easily make pieces to bring into a song without the need for further sample editing.

Auto-BPM detection will detect the tempo of a sample you copy into Glitchbreaks (you just need to specify the bars between 1-4). You can turn this feature off in order to manipulate audio that doesn’t have tempo, this is especially useful for manipulating voice samples.

Glitchbreaks contains a 4 channel mixer to adjust the levels of each sample, as you change the levels the sounds are combined into the mix, on the iPad version this is displayed graphically with a rendered waveform that is combined to give you an indication of what the entire sound looks like.

All of this is very easy to operate and even a beginner will be glitching and juggling breaks like a pro in minutes.

  1. Latest update sounds like it will make the glitch/modulation sections much better in use. Looking forward to this update ;-)

  2. I just wrapped up 1.02

Bug Fixes in the File Loader

Now supports Background Audio and mixing with other apps.

Glitch Pad – Made it more dynamic, now it glitches where the waveform is, and moving your finger changes the index.

Loop Modulation – Now it locks into the loop length, instead of letting the waveform play to catch up, also if you set loop start to the very end it will not cross over anymore.

Index Tracking – now when you Glitch, Cut, Loop Mod, or Reverse it remembers where you started, and when you are done, it drops you to where the sample would have played to on it’s own, making it so these functions do not take the sample off time.

    1. Sounds a great update Alex. Good industry and thanks for listening.

Come on Apple we want to play with these new features ;-)

      1. Trueyorky, I do need a few more beta testers, send me a message in the contact form on Glitchbreaks.com if you are interested.

        Alex

    2. Loop Modulation – Now it locks into the loop length, instead of letting the waveform play to catch up, also if you set loop start to the very end it will not cross over anymore.

I misspoke, I mean now it locks into the loop start :P

  3. Glitchbreaks v1.01 is now in the Appstore, it fixes the Audio Paste issue with short names, and caps the quantize at 1/256th, and a few small changes in the credits screen.

  4. The only issue I see, especially on the Glitch Pad is that some sounds have some silence between the drums, if you activate glitch in a silent spot, it won’t glitch anything, but I think that maybe expected, I will see if I can work in the touch to move after the glitches start vacation that I had before, but with the new setting.

    1. OK and not such a problem on the iPad of course as we can see the waveform.

      1. I got it working, with a good movement range to be able to fine tune the position after the initial touch, so this really won’t be a problem on iPhone either.

  5. I added some functionality this morning and at lunchtime, yes I developed most of this app on my lunch breaks, and between 5:30-6:30am before work.

I changed the Glitch Pad to start the auto glitches at the current sample location

I changed the Loop Modulation to not keep playing if you move the loop start further down the waveform. Now it locks into your location.

I am planning on working on Sample Offset this evening.

I am also planning on making these modifications a setting, but am leaning towards this behavior being default, and the old behavior being the alt setting.

    What do you think?

    Alex

    1. Fantastic work. I go with the new settings as default. Can’t wait already!!

    2. Sounds good to me ;-)

  6. Nice little App. But I’m struggling with the controls and what’s going on! Is there a help file? What I’m doing doesn’t seem to be very musical no matter how hard I try!

    1. Yes, there is a user manual here http://glitchbreaks.com/usermanual
You can also find a link to it, inside the app.

      Thanks,

      Alex

      1. I didn’t see it there. Cheers for that. Makes much more sense now I’ve read that. Good stuff ;-)

  7. More FX please Alex. I would like the X-Y modulation pad to be selectable say with HP & LP filters. Also a metronome would be useful for performance record. I have created some pretty cool live mixes but it would be nice to have a background click option. As you have already noted the glitch and cut points need to be selectable along the sample and for my off the wall suggestion why not assign two samples to one pad so we could morph sounds in the mix. Now that would be interesting.

As it is this app is really good so with a few additions it will be FANTASTIC. Keep up the good work.

    1. I would really like to add more effects. It was one of the things I kept trying to incorporate during development, but was not happy with the results. I was spending a lot of time on it, and was spinning my wheels, so decided to keep moving forward to finish a solid first version.

I had never thought of a metronome, this maybe an interesting idea for Glitchbreaks, I will have to look into what the best method for implementing that is, I can see where it would be useful if you are glitching a beat way out of timing, to be able to then snap it back in time, although with the nature of the always running loops I would definitely have to think about a retrigger method.

I am not quite sure how 2 samples assigned to the same pad would work out, if it would play the samples at different volumes depending on where you touched on the pad, would be a bit too unpredictable, and I would shy away from introducing another horizontal slider under each pad, also performance would begin taking a hit, because it would double the channels of simultaneous audio.

      Thanks,

      Alex

  8. Great job Alex !…awesome for a first App..
You have the advantage now to quickly build this up…
Lot of oppurtinities to enhance this …
I am imagining a combinition of this and the awesome free dBlue Glitch VST kind of interface..
after some quick musical doodling, some wishes… :
    - is it possible for the horizontal pitch control to “snap” back to its starting position ?
I keep loosing that slider position and might be a good idea that once you have finished dragging the slider to final position , you can double tap on it and it snaps back to the starting position.
-background audio !!…please add the option to keep playing in the background.
    - can the waveform display window be made more colorful and interactive ?
it will be cool if we can setup the cuts on the display itself by dragging some sliders.
every cut can be assigned a differetn color too so it will be cool to identify the cuts.

    1. Thank you Pat,

-The circular arrow button above the pitch slider is Pitch Reset, and snaps it back to default.
-Yes, along with Core Midi, background audio is on my list!
-Display window, I thought about something like this, but I was trying to keep functionality identical for iPhone and iPad, since iPhone doesn’t have a display.. I will keep this in mind though, I like the idea.

      Thanks Again,

      Alex

  9. Hi Alex and thank you very much for actively participating in this discussion and taking criticism (ideas for improvement) so seriously :)
GlitchBreaks is truly fantastic app in its early (ver.1) release and I’m sure (judging by your dedication) it will truly shine eventually.
Anyway, I love it now, even with its few flaws and glitches here and there…
Certainly the app I will definitely support in long term.
    Love it :)

    1. Thank you so much, I wanted to let everyone know, I submitted version 1.01 to Apple, this will fix some issues with Audiopaste, (pasting with a filename of 3 characters or less).
I put a cap on the Quantize, meant to cap it before I released it, was infinite… now you can quantize up to 1/256th
And I made a small correction to the credit text.

My first priority for a feature update, is Core Midi, but I will see if I can get Sample offset settings in, and make the Auto Glitch feature a little more flexible.

      Thank you All,

      Alex

    2. @Leslie yes, I love it too… “glitches” and all ;-) (sorry I couldn’t resist). Great app, looking forward to seeing this grow!

  10. First app, amazing work alex :-)

  11. Thanks Alex, it’s nice to know that you’ll be in touch with the community.

I’d really love to see GlitchBreaks evolving to a great app. And don’t take my criticism too seriously, I’m enjoying GlitchBreaks, it is just some features that I’m missing which I think would make GlitchBreaks more usable and enjoyable. :)

  12. Hi All,

Thank you all for the feedback, both good and bad :).

I am definitely open ears to improving the app as much as possible. It is no excuse, but this is my first audio app as well, so I have been learning the black arts that are core audio, and finally a book was just released on the subject, a couple of weeks ago, got it! But as you can imagine I had a final build ready at that point.

I am also working on the glitchbreaks.com website and will be creating a community page there for feedback and suggestions, as well as a place to be kept up to date with improvements and goals for future updates.

    Thanks again,

    Alex

  13. This is far from merely a loop trigger app. The limitations in this first release lend themselves to some creative workarounds also. Remember, old analog synths and 8 bit chips were only as cool as they finally became because they were limited. They were used in ways not intended, and became great. People are freaking spoiled nowadays, but of course, to each their own.

    1. I agree with that too. Constraints/Limitations lead us to creative solutions. :) I’ll be working around its current limitations, and I’m sure I’ll be amazed by unexpected workarounds/results. But that doesn’t mean either that we shouldn’t give feedback in order to improve something.

      1. true enough ;)

  14. Hi Have to agree with you on all points, the dev knows and hopefully will sort these issues.

In sync sample offset trigger is essential as is ext midi sync.

    1. That’s good news, thanks for the update! I hope the developer keeps improving the app.

Maybe I’ve been a bit harsh for a first version. Sorry. :)

  15. Far from being the ultimate glitching tool.

This could have been a great tool, however at its current form is no more than 4 loop-triggering pads to me.

I mean, the rest of the FXs/manipulation tools are nearly useless to me. What’s the point of having a Glitch XY pad with predefined patterns/styles that always start at the beginning of the loop? Boring. The same with the Cut XY pad, you can configure the triggering pattern but it will always start at the beginning of the loop. Boring. The Loop Modulation XY pad is unpredictable in the worst way, it is hard to hit/guess a meaningful loop point and loop duration. Why I can’t live retrigger/repeat, mute, reverse… specific slices/points, always in sync?

In my opinion, GlitchBreaks could have been much more usable and fun if it combined some features present in other apps like studio.HD (stutter/repeating XY pad FXs), LoopTwister (FXs per slice, always beat-synced), chipPad (slice triggering), Beat Twirl (slice manipulation)…
