Grain Science (Universal)

Grain Science is a beautiful new iOS Universal Synthesiser. Designed for musicians, soundscape artists and SFX engineers who want to go beyond Sylo Synthesiser, Grain Science is built on similar principles of granular synthesis, but is vastly more powerful.

Use the built-in waveforms, or record or import your own — then use the sophisticated grain engine to create something completely new from them! Grain Science is easy to get to grips with, but offers lots of depth to explore: instead of offering one or two LFOs, almost any parameter in the system can be programmed to vary over time in complex ways.

Using new optimisations available in iOS 5, we can provide two grain units per voice, which you can combine for morphing or complex modulated sounds, then send through a configurable FX chain. Pick any 4 from the collection of FX units (including various types of distortion, high- and low-pass filters, phaser, resonance and echo), and connect them up in any order. Other audio tweaks include soft loop, reverb, glide and supercharger controls, and the ability to affect granular synthesis in realtime (live grain bending).

Also featured are an arpeggiator with both chord and step-sequence modes; Core MIDI support, including “tap & twist” learning for setting up controls; and a customisable performance screen with a collection of XY Pads and wheels.

Rounding it off, Grain Science plays nicely with others: Dropbox, Twitter and email integration are all included, for sharing or exporting your waveforms, recordings of your performances, and instrument (patch) designs.

Grain Science is AudioBus compatible.

  1. This app sounds great. You can make some crazy sounds with it which is always good :)

  2. It would be great if you could upload /download instruments you have created /user instruments to and from their site?

I am very impressed with what this synth this can create .Unique sounds understandably different to other synths around.

  3. Animoog is a synth, Grain Science is a granular sampler with very flexible routing. Two totally different animals. However, everyone including myself loves to compare apps to Animoog or Sunrizer, lol. IMHO there are two sampler choices for ios, Samplewiz and this bad boy. Buy it.

  4. What does Animoog have to do with anything? It is a completely different synth.

I definitely would not call it “incredibly more versatile”- can you use your own samples and granularly manipulate them in Animoog ? (no) Or modulate practically everything? (no)

    Animoog sounds great, but….

  5. In the same category Animoog for iPad by Moog which is incredibly more versatile and powerful, and the X/Y pads do affect the sounds…and it cost 1$ for a limited time…

    1. Error !
Animoog for iPhone is 0,99$ and the iPad version is 9,99$

Animoog for iPhone Intro Offer. Price is still just $0.99 http://t.co/reM3noQW

    2. Not even in the same category as Animoog!
Animoog is a synth and that is it. Grain Science is a dual sampler with mind bending manipulation tools. Sounds like you are a “preset” person. Animoog is indeed a steal, but Grain Science allows to mesh sounds from all the various flavors of synths for IPad. The cost in irrelevant when you look at all it can do.
Sorry just feel your statement was a bit to general and off base.

  6. Magnificent possibilities. I just wish that synth like that could be available as an in app purchase for NS for example. It supports Core MIDI as well.
Definitely worth the “app of the week” tag.

  7. Its a way better version of silo to me. Gonna try out the x/y pads…but there are several parameters that seem a bit dormant. Hmmmm.

  8. This is the best sound design tool to date for the IPAD! $10.00 is a steal considering the unlimited possibilites!

  9. Great synth. I’m loving this. Bought it because I liked Silo Synth and this looked really good for drone/soundscape/noise/FX stuff. Very impressive, well layer out. Good stuff. But yes, I’ve also noticed the thing with the XY pads. Erm, they don’t seem to do a lot! I thought I didn’t have them enabled or something. Cold this be a bug?!

  10. I have that doubt too…
    Go to ask to wooji

  11. I’ve been playing with this for a while and notice that a lot of the effects when assigned to XY pads don’t really make an impact on the sound. anyone else notice this? Really well built app though.

  12. Magnificent Synth..
    Have all I need.
    Great work Wooji Juice
