SampleWiz (Universal)

From the creators of the award-winning iOS app MorphWiz comes SampleWiz – pushing the boundaries of traditional sampling instruments!

Jordan Rudess: Wizdom Music - SampleWiz

Jordan says: In creating this instrument I wanted to create something that would appeal to the sonic explorer in all of us. Creating a sampler for iOS devices has allowed us to push the boundaries of traditional sampling instruments. From playing a selection of my signature sounds on the SampleWiz keyboard (JR lead anyone?) to getting up close and personal with sounds by playing directly on the waveform screen, our mission was to blow your mind, put a smile on your face, and expand your creativity. In creating SampleWiz, we have created partnerships with leading sound developers in addition to my personally selected onboard presets.

We have poured our hearts and minds into this and driven our families, bandmates, and friends insane by sampling everything that moves. I hope you enjoy this very expressive and wild music app creation!

FEATURES:

  • Choose from three different sampling modes: classic, granular, and modern.
  • Classic – the traditional method of sampling where the sound will speed up and slow down as you go higher or lower than the recorded pitch.
  • Granular – Wizdom Music’s own take on a granular synthesis engine. Adjust grain size and speed while the entire range of notes maintain the same speed.
  • Modern – a new take that opens up new sampling possibilities using Dirac technology to allow formants and time to be adjusted automatically over a device-selected range.
  • Up to 10 seconds per sample.
  • Never-before-shared Jordan Rudess presets from his private collection.
  • Resample anything that you play on the playing surface to create all new samples derived from your existing presets!
  • Three playing surface modes allow you to play on the keyboard, wave-edit screen, and the ADSR window.
  • Wizdom Music’s Advanced Pitch Rounding for initial attack as well as after a slide.
  • Every note you play is an independent event allowing powerful, expressive control of pitch and amplitude.
  • Finger vibrato effect allows you to achieve vibrato even when pitch lock is activated!
  • Unique visuals for each sampling mode. A glow tracks your fingers and respond to the amount of amplitude of every note you play.
  • Real time drawing of waveform in keyboard and wave-edit modes.
  • Amplitude visual cloud display in all play modes.
  • Choose from many different scales and customize your own. These apply to all three play modes.
  • Play your samples forward or reverse!
  • Looping options include standard looping as well as back-and-forth looping.
  • Allows trimming of samples.
  • Unique visualization of the amplitude envelope on the ADSR page.
  • FX include delay with a choice of tap-tempo, BPM, and seconds control over the rate.
  • Have two keyboards on the screen, each with its own range and scale!
  • Unique hold mode where every held note can be in a different synthesis mode!
  • Share your presets with friends by mailing them as SampleWiz files or standard audio files.
  • Assign a unique photo icon to any preset.
  • Play directly on the waveform and hear the audio that is right under your finger. Slide each finger separately in any direction to change pitch and position in the sample.
  • MAPI AudioCopy/AudioPaste allows sharing of audio with top audio apps.
  • Load your own audio files directly into SampleWiz with iTunes file sharing.
  • Onboard help screens explain every parameter. Touch the question mark to activate.

  1. SampleWiz is an example of one of the better sample based instruments available for the iPad.
One of my favorite features is the classic, granular, modern sample playback styles. All three involve very different concepts of what the sample you enter will sound like. In general I find myself using granular and modern styles the most with the occasional use of classic playback. Modern playback offers an edgy yet fully useful sound as easily comfortable in commercial music as it would be in avant garde. Granular, while having a more experimental/glitchy feel also works within more sedate compositions.
The GUI is excellent giving good flow and understanding of what you are working with and how to work in it. Many apps fail in user interfaces one way or another, so this is another pleasant aspect to SampleWiz.
These simple editing tools are simple but efficient and getting the job done for the sounds that you will make within SampleWiz. In fact, the program flow is quite efficient and easy to work through.
MIDI is excellently covered although strangely missing AudioBus capability, lets hope this forward thinking company adds it soon. Also nicely enhanced are the extra scales that are available including your own should you enjoy making such.
This is an easy call, totally worth it cost and well serving to anyone that plans to add sampling into their iOS kit. There are use your to work with sampling devices, there are more complex and capable devices, but overall nothing satisfies me than working with SampleWiz. It’s balance of intuitive and quick editing of necessary components keeps editing fun as well as fast within the course of songwriting or composing. Also, moving SampleWiz endeavors has resulted in clean, highly useful results when working in Cubase 7 on my regular DAW.
If asked to qualify the sound I would say the output from SampleWiz is similar to modern day rompler based synths as well as high-quality Computer based virtual instruments.

  2. I couldn’t disagree more with James. This app is fantastic. multi-touch sample playing and real-time clipping and looping of samples while I’m playing them makes this infinitely useful for live performance. Only thing I don’t like is that it’s a bit difficult to precisely dial in a bpm, other than that it’s awesome. The preloaded samples are a mixed bunch though, there are some amazing sounds mixed in with some odd fluff – still worth getting imo.

  3. Personally I don’t like this. It can create some wacky sounds but nothing really musical or even useable IMO. You’d be better off trying Sylo Synth for free. It is much better and makes this look expensive in comparison.
