Retronyms TableTop for iPad

Tabletop is the first musical environment designed from the ground up exclusively for the iPad. Each device has its own uses, characteristics, personality—ranging from classics like drum pad samplers to touchscreen effects.

Plug the output of a keyboard into a delay to add an echo, or wire it up to a mixer and adjust the pan. Chain up multiple effects to create new and evolving sounds. Tabletop is an audio playground where you can create beats, compose songs, mix live, make mashups with samples from your iPod library… the possibilities are wide open. Just drag the devices you want to use to the tabletop and chain them together like you would with real hardware.

Tabletop has been designed to fit nicely into your studio. Move your sounds to and from Tabletop using iTunes File Transfer, sample from the mic, line-in, or even from your iPod library right in the app. Plus, support for AudioPaste lets you paste sounds from other iOS apps.

TableTop also supports Korg’s WIST (Wireless Sync Technology) protocol. Sync up two iPads and jam!

Drum kits, synth and tone patches, as well as multiple demo songs, have been contributed from artists such as Salva and Exillon.

  1. I think rhythm studio is better than this, this app needs purchases in that case they are loosing costumer like me…

  2. Retronyms has once again moved forward with the recent update. Still no pasteboard export but they have among other things implemented the most requested swing feature, an equalizer and a new drum module with pr. beat pan setting, volume, pitch, distortion and more and four individual outs. Great move, Retronyms. However, still high prices pr. module, so I have just spent another small fortune on this app. Better make it worth it, Retronyms, so plz continue the updates at the same speed.

  3. Davide,
In iTunes transfer, you can definitely delete Wav recordings from the iPad. Just highlight and hit delete on your keyboard.

    1. Yeah, but you can not do it internally. There are a lot of us who hate iTunes and being dependent on PC, therefore they should fix it anyway and in addition they should imply pasteboard copy to your finished tunes and not just paste, so we can use tabletop 100% free from PCs. After all that is what “mobile” Music production is about.

      1. After adding their RS4000 synth, I have for the first time made some music on TableTop and I must say I like the concept a lot. However playing around with it unfortunately made my wish-list even longer than before. I hope they will work on these issues, so the app can be worth the “fortune” I bought it for the day it was released. Here is my priority list:

        1) Audio copy (and not just paste) so we do not have to transfer by virtue of a PC and iTunes.

        2) Individual pans on Gridlok

        3) More outputs on gridlok

        4) The ability to import and use own samples in RS3 and M8RX and/or adding many many more samples to these devices.

        5) EQ module

        6) Filter envelope follower module

        7) Swing function

        8) A way to rename and delete your sound files from the “my sounds” folder .

9). A way to copy and paste bars within the same block, so you can extend the number of bars in a block without having to re-record the loop.

        10) Octave control on R3S

I’ll stop here but the list goes on. TableTop is finally usable to me at present but whether I will grow tired of it in the long run depends upon the updates.

        Cheers

  4. I mean it was about time to have an app like this but, and i totally agree with Incarnate X, about all his points.
All this effort and then once transfer via itunes my wav file I can not possibly delete it from ipad for the rest of my life??
Cmon if you want this to be TOP APP you must solve this immense mistake!
Please do it soon or people won’t buy it and if they have done like me, they won’t use it!

    d

  5. Hi John-Paul
I do like the concept of the app and its expensive modules but right now it is rather unusable to me due to some serious limitations. However you can make up for those limitations in future updates by:

    1) Adding audio copy (and not just paste) so we do not have to transfer by virtue of a PC and iTunes. Being dependent on PC spoils the concept of the iPad as a mobile device in every possible way.

    2) Adding the ability to import and use own samples in RS3 and M8RX and/or adding many many more samples to these devices.

    3) Adding Eq and compressor modules for mastering within tabletop.

    4) Adding swing function and the possibility of playing in odd signatures

    5) Adding a way to delete your sound files and exports from the “my sounds” folder or else you will use up the iPad’s memory.

I could name a few other wishes but these, which I have gathered from a thread at KVR seem to be the most requested… and for good reasons IMO. Hope to see them in future updates.

    Best regards

  6. Those having audio problems, a couple tips: Try restarting your iPad. Try Closing other apps from the task bar. If you’re still having problems, email us at support@retronyms.com

  7. @James
Quantizing does work and is adjustable from 0-100% and is 0% by default ;)
I am iPad 1 user and do not suffer from any pops or clicks, do you have other apps running in the background?
Please get yourself familiar with the app first before posting comments that everything is broken and doesn’t work… ;)

    1. You’re right, the quantize does appear to work but I think all of the audio stuttering makes it seem not to work correctly. I removed all background apps and retested. Still lots of audio glitches, pops and crackling pretty much all the time. I’m not the only one. Take a look at the iTunes reviews. I hope they fix the audio glitches.

      1. The audio problems are far worse on the tabletop view. It’s not so bad when zoomed into a device but it is still an issue.

  8. Yep, getting loads of audio breaking up even with only one keyboard playing a simple monophonic bassline. The quantize doesn’t seem to work at all either. With a broken quantize and no step sequencer or piano roll it becomes pretty difficult to produce anything useable with this app. Also, having to pay all that money for extra (and very basic) effects seems crazy. I really hope they change the pricing structure. The basic delay and reverb are essentials with any app, and having to stump up another 10 dollars for just those two extras seems unfair, and then another 10 dollars for a mixer that can actually use the two effects you’ve already paid for (the regular one doesn’t include sends!). I bet if they do add a sequence or piano roll that will be another 10 dollars. It’s a nice idea, but the plugin devices are all too basic and the price doesn’t reflect that. You’d be better off spending your money on separate synth and drum machine apps and a good sequencer app that all make use of audiocopy/paste The instruments would be far greater quality and have more depth (Sunrizer, Addictive, DM1, FunkBox, EPS etc.) and give you a lot more for your money. At the moment TableTop is a 1 or 2 star app.

    1. okay, thought I should update my review. After upgrading to an iPad 2 Tabletop has caused me no problems at all. No glitches. Reverb sounds like it should do. I am very happy with it. I still think the extra devices are expensive but once I stump up the cash I am happy with the quality. The new v1.3 update is excellent. This is really becoming a great studio now proper instruments have been released. I’m loving the new TT-303 and XOX. Suits my style of music. Good work Retronyms :-)

  9. Has anyone else tried TableTop with an iPad1? I’m getting loads of pops and crackles. Most audible when you play some of the demo songs that use lots of the devices, but I do get it even when only using one keyboard with certain patches when only playing one key. Anyone else found this?

  10. Looks very interesting, I want to test.

  11. Looks great, a little bit “Reason like” with all the patching. Got to ear more of the sound it produces. Any idea for the price of optional devices ?

    1. I think they will be $4.99 for each additional device, which makes the introductory bundle quite a good price.

  12. Very nice indeed…
    ***** stars :)
So much ahead in concept and delivery to BM2 ;)

  13. This looks very interesting! Like a VST pool for iPad :D
