TASCAM iU2 Audio/MIDI Interface for iOS Devices

TASCAM’s iU2 is a premium sound quality audio interface for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. It includes all of the features of TASCAM’s best-selling USB audio interfaces, including a pair of great-sounding microphone inputs.

The XLR inputs have phantom power for use with high-quality condenser microphones. These feed an onboard microphone preamp and A/D converter for better sound performance than those built into iPhone and iPad – true stereo recording with low noise and less tendency to distort. The inputs also accept line-level signals or you can plug a guitar or bass directly into your device.

In addition to compatibility with iOS devices, the iU2 also works with Mac and Windows computers. A zero-latency monitoring path allows musicians to hear themselves directly through the unit, without any distracting delay. MIDI in and out are provided to interface with synths and drum machines, and a digital output connects to digital mixers or recorders.

  1. Looks great but why is there only a digital out but not a digital in for sampling? That makes no sense to me. I’d rather have a digital in than an out. Maybe they could have one digital with an in-out switch on it.

  2. I wonder what the new dock connector on the iPhone 5 (and future iDevices) will mean for these accessories. From the images it looks like the dock cable is hardwired (i.e. not upgradeable).

  3. are there any other interfaces that offer both audio and midi in one box?

    1. …that support audio and midi and hopefully work with ipod touch, iphone AND ipad.
It should not be difficult for hardware guys to add a ios 30pin port on a existing audio interface….cmon !!!!
Why invent a new device , just throw in 30 pin adapter and update firmware on your Existing devices,,
I guess there is no money in that.

  4. Has anyone got this to work with background audio? If I fire up Sunrizer and put it in the back ground so I can sequence with genome or beat maker. My audio output gets all glitchy. Audio is fine when not using this iu2.

    1. Oh dear, that’s not good! I can’t help you with regards the Tascam iU2 as I don’t own it (yet!) but what I can say is that the other audio interfaces I’ve tried with the iPad handle background audio just fine. Have you reported this to Tascam? It might be a known issue. Maybe this can be fixed in a firmware update.

  5. just purchased this unit. it’s compact and full of features. it works as advertised and sounds great however you shoud be aware of a few things:

    1. The 48v phantom power is only available when the unit is powered from its USB port.

    2. In order for the iOS device to recognize the iU2 consistently and reliably you must connect the iU2 to the device BEFORE launching your audio app. After launching your audio app you can then connect the power supply to the iU2 to enable 48v phantom power and charge the battery on your iOS device.

    1. 3. Like the iM2 microphone, it also messes with the cellular settings on iPhones.

  6. Video using ableton running loops and 2 instances of zebra 2, a tempest drum machine, UC-33e controller and an ipad running finger bassline, nlog synth and animoog, a m-audio fast track pro and a tascam IU2…

  7. After the awful job they did with the FireOne, I’m a bit leery of anything TASCAM has to offer now.

  8. Interesting, I really hope it charges the ipad with optional power adapter.
