I recently discovered a couple of techniques with Garageband which I thought I would share. Until now, i had overlooked the guitar amp module as i don’t play guitar, but you can use it with (for example) iMic to record vocals and this gives more options for processing the sound, such as EQ (ok, only basic but stil…), compressor, etc. All of the amp settings and stomp box effects can be used. Much more versatile than just using the Audio Recorder.
Further, you can use the Merge Tracks facility to convert ANY track from an internal instrument to an audio file (you can just select the one track, you don’t need to merge multiple tracks). Initially this will be an Audio Recorder track. Add a new track and select the guitar amp instrument but dont record anything, then go to Track view and drag the merged audio track to the guitar amp track (you can now delete the original Audio track if required). You can now use any of the guitar amp facilities to process your track – for example i set up a beat in the Smart Drums module, converted it and then used the compressor and phase units, plus some eq on the amp settings, to produce a very different sounding rhythm track.
I hope these ideas are useful to some of your readers.
Thanks, definitely useful!
I was hoping for some more control over the cheesy vocal effects, namely a compressor and parametric EQ.
Yeah, note editing was the only feature that I was missing from the original release.
This update addresses that and adds few more little features to make GB truly complete DAW.
5 stars here…
Yes i should have mentioned note editing as well. Garageband does support Core Midi so you can play the instruments from a Midi keyboard connected with the camera kit for example. But i like your suggestions too!
Love the Strings update and of course the note editing. The strings sound great. Still needs background play and proper copy/paste. Won’t hold my breath for any MIDI features. I can barely get virtual midi going smoothly among the more robust apps anyway.
OMG – what a great update! This addresses some of the issues with the previous version such as the track limit, has some nice workflow enhancements such as a better song management screen, ans then adds new smart instruments including an incredible strings module! This will enable very expressive string arrangements to be created, with solo and group strings, bowed and pizzicato styles, chord and note modes etc. Amazing! I’m going to lose hours on that alone. I hope in the future they will also add other orchestral instruments and saxes.
