Taking its name from the most famous drum machine, the 808 is a colloquial term for the recognizable booming bass sound heard in trap, hip-hop, drum and bass and other electronic genres.
While 808 drum machine is pretty rare and most of the producers cant afford spending few thousand dollars for vintage device, there are modern recreations: Roland TR-08 - digital remake of the drum machine and recently announced Behringer 808 clone. And if you have Eurorack - there are pretty affordable modules that emulate 808 sounds.
But majority of the modern producers would use samples (808 is probably the most sampled device in the world…) or re-synthesize similar sound. Here are 3 tutorials with great explanation on how to recreate and process 808 bass sound.
